Golf Professionals
Rocky Rafkin
Rocky Rafkin has been teaching golf continuously at the San Clemente Golf Course since 1981. A PGA Class A member since 1986, he describes his work as "the dream job of a lifetime." "Teaching never gets old," Rafkin states, "you can always find new and better ways to communicate the mechanics and wonders of this very unique game." Rocky enjoys teaching all levels from youth and beginners to fellow professionals. He has been honored with several awards from the PGA section, including the 2005 Junior Golf Leader award.
Rocky describes his teaching philosophy as minimalistic and believes that each student comes with something good that should be preserved and nurtured. According to Rocky, "there is no one right way to swing, but each student should have a good working knowledge of their own right way."
Rafkin grew up in San Clemente and played golf here at the muni for 25 cents as a junior. "It was a wonderful place to grow up," says Rafkin. "When we got tired of the beach we could golf for a quarter! We learned to get the ball in the hole by playing the game." He still holds true to this philosophy, telling his students to "play, practice, and play some more."
Rocky holds several very popular summer camps for youth each season and stresses the fun in learning and love of the game. He also holds over 200 clinics each year for youth and beginners. These clinics are a great way to get exposed to the game. They are fun and affordable and best of all you just show up.
Rafkins hobbies include several golf related business interests, spear fishing, reading, and trying to keep his own game in competitive shape. He also serves on the Presidents Council for Growing the Game and the PGA committee for teaching the physically challenged. He resides close by the course in San Clemente with his wife Shannon and his children Ryan, Ashley, and Whitney.
